How to Find a Job With Linkedin

Just a few weeks into the 2011 Networking Challenge, I attended a seminar at my school about linkedin.  I realized that linkedin is a GREAT way for me to find people I don’t know for informational interviews.  I have to interview 4 every month so I can use all the help I can get!  I quickly searched my connections and realized that I had friends who knew people in the field that I wanted to learn more about.  A big barrier to networking is not knowing who to reach out to and how to find them.  Linkedin can make this so easy for you!  Even if you aren’t hunting for a job you should get connected and build up your network.  You will never know when you might need it!

So if you are a Linkedin newbie, here is an easy overview of Linkedin and how you can make it work for you!

How to Find a Job With Linkedin

What is Linkedin?

LinkedIn is a business-oriented social networking site. Founded in December 2002 and launched in May 2003, it is mainly used for professional networking.  LinkedIn has more than 90 million users, spanning more than 200 countries and territories worldwide.

Why should I use Linkedin?

  1. Networking: Don’t be forgotten after the networking events you attend.  Connect with people you meet and thank them for their time.
  2. Be found by recruiters who are trying to fill positions.
  3. Identify and follow companies to stay up to date on industry trends.
  4. Connect with individuals at companies of interest to request informational interviews and see how you can help them.
  5. Search for jobs and find individuals at the company to refer you.
  6. Join groups to keep up with industry trends and allow access to send other group members messages.

How do I make Linkedin work for me?

  1. Fill out your profile as much as possible.  The good news is that there is no limit to size!
  2. Put in as many keywords as possible so recruiters pull up your resume in applicant searches.
  3. Don’t be scared to ask for recommendations.  People love helping others succeed.  If you did a great job at your last job, people you worked with will be happy to help you find that next opportunity.  Give recommenders guidance on what they can write about and make it as easy as possible for them!  And then be patient, don’t bug them after you ask!
  4. Join interesting groups to increase access to other connections.  See what’s going on in your industry and start a discussion.
  5. Find connections in companies you are interested in. Then, read my 5 easy steps to an informational interview.
  6. Connect with people you meet in person.  Linkedin is a great way to follow up and thank them for speaking with you.  What a great way to stay in touch!
