How to Get Over the Holiday Blues

Back at work today? You definitely want to read this post!

Whether you’ve been away for two weeks of sun, sea, sand, snow or have just had a wonderfully relaxing staycation at home, we all get a bit depressed when it ends. As the alarm goes off 7 am after a holiday, it’s straight back down to earth with a bump.
Then there’s the commute and long ‘To do’ list waiting for you on your desk. No wonder we get the blues, even if we usually enjoy our job!

So how do you get over the holiday blues?

Get through your To-do list right away!

It may sound obvious, but one of the main ways to get over the holiday blues is to take care of the pile of work you come back to. Whether it’s a full-to-bursting email inbox or a bunch of problems that cropped up while you were away, the first thing to do is get back in control.
Don’t panic, people will give you a break for a day or two while you settle in, so plow through your backlog first. Plus, some of it may have already been dealt with, in which case the delete button comes in handy. Prioritize what needs to be done and start working your way through the list – and be strict on limiting new work until this has been completed.

Have a catch-up session with your colleagues

OK, so your boss may not appreciate this but there is a good reason behind it. If you like your colleagues then having a chat and finding out the funny things that have happened while you’ve been away will remind you why your job can be fun.

Get Back into a Routine

After long, relaxing days and eating what you want, when you want, it’s no wonder that suddenly being stuck in the day-to-day pile of work can be a little disheartening. The best thing to get over this is try to get back into a routine as soon as possible.
Get a couple of early nights to dull the effect of that darn alarm clock, eat meals at set times before returning to work and get into the mindset of clocking on and off for the day.  This will make the painful transition a bit easier. We promise.

Treat Yourself

Last but not least, treat yourself! It could be catching up with your favorite magazine, stepping out for a lunch at your favorite restaurant or going somewhere nice for dinner as a last remaining treat before the post-holiday diet and pain of spending too much money on presents kicks in!

What is your favorite way to get over the holiday blues?
