How Men Should Button a Suit Jacket for a Job Interview
Guess what! Guys are reading our posts here at Classy Career Girl too! And I just got a question from a male reader, and since we all know that I can’t let anyone not get their questions answered, we are going to answer it today.
So if the question doesn’t apply to you, feel free to share it with your husband, boyfriend or male co-worker. Since I know nothing about men’s fashion, I had to ask a few other friends for help.
Thanks to Harrison Kratz, the Community Manager for MBA@UNC, the MBA online program from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and to Brittany Caudle, the Publisher of Fashion Favors the Brave, a space dedicated to the admiration of men’s style and fashion from a woman’s perspective.

Button a Suit Jacket for a Job Interview

Dear Classy Career Girl,

Should my suit jacket be buttoned when I have an interview? In my Twitter and FB profile pics, my suit is undone, is that a major fashion mistake?

Thanks,

How Men Should Button a Suit Jacket for a Job Interview

Dear Want To Be a Classy Career Guy,
Harrison’s answer: When you walk into a room for an interview, your suit should be buttoned and then you can unbutton when you are seated. It shows you are aware, comfortable, and composed. I really wouldn’t worry about the Facebook photos though. As long as you can present yourself well, employers won’t be too nitpicky about those minor details.
Brittany’s answer: Yes, a man’s suit should stay buttoned during an interview while he is standing and unbuttoned when he sits down.  He will keep the last button unbuttoned at all times.
If he wears a single button jacket, his jacket will remain buttoned while standing and unbuttoned while sitting.  For a double-breasted suit, he will button all buttons except for the last one.  Shown here:

It gives great, easy to follow guidelines on the proper fit of shirts and suits based on different body types.
Thanks again to Brittany and Harrison for their great answers!
