How to Narrow Down The One Thing To Focus On

When I’m launching, it’s hard for me to be a present mom. A balanced life is a lie. Magic happens at the extremes. To achieve an extraordinary result you must choose what matters and give it all the time it demands. This requires getting extremely out of balance in relation to all other work issues. When you act on your priority, you’ll automatically go out of balance, giving more time to one thing over another. Start leading a counterbalanced life. Let the right things take precedence when they should and get to the rest when you can.

On the podcast today, we’re going to talk about The One Thing. You may be just joining us, you may have a billion ideas of what you want to do with your business, the type of business you want to start, or ways to earn money. You might have a ton of ideas, a ton of things on your to-do list, right? How many things right now are on your to-do list of things you’re supposed to do today. So this concept is all based on the book The One Thing by Gary Keller and Jay Papasan, highly recommended. I don’t even recommend it. It’s your required reading in CRP.

Your One Thing: Narrowing it down

How do you narrow down your goals and know what to focus on? I discussed how to map out your big vision and break down the next steps on your plan.

Get the Boook

The biggest thing I want you to take away from this book, and this is kind of the foundation of everything we teach, is to focus on your big goal, your big vision, your big dreams.

MAPPING OUT YOUR DREAMS

Think big. Focus on your big vision.

  • Where do you want to be in 10 years? What does your life look like in 10 years?
  • Then, take that 10-year goal and back it up to the next 5 years. What is your 5-year goal? What needs to happen in the next 5 years to reach your 10-year goal?
  • Then, what needs to happen in the next year to reach your 5-year goal?
  • Then, what needs to happen in the next 90 days for you to reach that annual goal?
  • And then, what needs to happen in the next month to reach your 90-day goal?

As you start to become more familiar with this process, it will help you prioritize what is truly important and what your one thing is. This will also help you create your 90-day plan and it will help you determine what you need to do today.

Knocking out 100 tasks for whatever reason is a poor substitute for doing even one task that’s meaningful and important.

VISION JOURNAL

Spend some time dreaming about your vision. I can’t help you start a business or create your dream career if you are unclear what your long term vision truly is. Don’t grow a business that you aren’t going to love. This is why it’s so important to focus on your vision before we even start Phase 1.

THE BIG QUESTION

The One Thing this week: What is the one thing that you can do this week, such that by doing it everything else would be easier or unnecessary? Ask yourself this every week!

Example: Recording podcast episodes this week will make summer better. And will help out the team because episodes won’t have to be all done last minute.

Figuring out my summer schedule.

Create a vision journal, vision board, or a secret Pinterest vision board. Knowing where you want to be in the future is the best place to start when creating a fulfilling business. Here are some questions to get you thinking:

Example: This summer I want to spend with my daughters because I worked too hard last summer. So I am trying to batch all my podcast episodes for the summer this week.

  • What do you want to create in the future?
    Happiness. Change.
  • When you imagine completing your goal, what does your life look like?
    Happy working mama.
  • Where do you see yourself long term (5-10 years)?

Words and phrases:

I was asked by a member to share some examples of vision boards. If you feel comfortable, feel free to post your vision boards in the comments below.

Anna Runyan's 2013 Vision Board

This is mine from my 2013 goals. It’s so interesting that I didn’t put a photo of a baby on here. We were desperately trying to have a baby but seeing photos of babies made me sad since at that point I already had two miscarriages and the doc said our chances weren’t good.

So because I felt like this was a situation I couldn’t really control, I focused on how I wanted to feel for the year instead… being happy, balanced, healthy, and focusing on friends and family. So when you are doing your vision board, it doesn’t have to always be “things” you want, it can also be the words and feelings you want to focus on for the year.

Spoiler alert: I did get pregnant with Mila that year so I think it worked! 🙂

Now I keep a secret vision board on Pinterest. Each year I create a new one secret board to set my vision for the year and I try to look at it everyday as part of my morning routine.
